PUNE: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit the Pune-based Serum Institute of India on Saturday, which has partnered with global pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford for the Covid-19 vaccine, a senior official said Thursday.
The Central Medicines Standards Control Organization has granted permission for the manufacture of the Covid-19 vaccine for preclinical testing, examination and analysis to seven companies, two of which are the Serum Institute of India (SII) and Gennova Biopharmaceuticals.
“We have received a confirmation on Prime Minister Modi’s visit to the Serum Institute of India on Saturday, but his minute-by-minute program has yet to be received,” said Pune Division Commissioner Saurabh Rao.
On Tuesday, Rao said there was a possibility of the prime minister’s visit to Pune, and if that happens, it would be aimed at reviewing the status of the candidate vaccine for coronavirus infection and learning about its launch, production and distribution mechanisms.
Rao had also reported that ambassadors and envoys from 100 countries will visit the Serum Institute of India and Gennova Biopharmaceuticals Ltd here on December 4.
