Father Stan Swamy’s lawyer filed a new application Thursday requesting instructions from prison authorities to allow him winter clothing and a straw and a sip in prison.

Swamy, 83, a Jesuit priest, was arrested on October 8 at his home in Ranchi for his alleged role in inciting mob violence in Bhima Koregaon near Pune in Maharashtra on January 1, 2018.

He was in preventive prison and since then has been in the Taloja jail.

In early November, Swamy’s lawyer, Sharif Shaikh, had submitted a request to instruct the National Investigative Agency (NIA) to provide a straw and a sip that had been taken from him at the time of his arrest.

NIA special counsel Prakash Shetty told the court Thursday that they are not carrying any of Swamy’s things with them.

Following this, defense attorneys submitted a request seeking instructions to prison authorities to hand it over to Swamy at a cost. The defense has alleged that he has been suffering from Parkinson’s disease and needs a straw and slippers for everyday use.

Upon receiving the new application, the court has asked the prison authority to present a report before December.

Swamy is known for fighting for the rights of the tribes in the state of Jharkhand and was part of the Jharkhand Organization Against Uranium Radiation (JOAR), a campaign against Uranium Corporation India Limited in 1996. He has been working for the welfare and the rights of displaced people from Bokaro, Santhal Parganas and Koderma.

In a statement issued just prior to his arrest, Swamy said: “The nature of the current NIA investigation of me has nothing to do with the Bhima-Koregaon case in which I have been registered as a ‘presumed defendant’ and, in Consequently, I have been raided twice (August 28, 2018 and June 12, 2019). But it had everything to do with establishing in some way (i) that I am personally linked to left extremist forces, (ii) that through me, Bagaicha is also related to some Maoists. I denied both accusations in the strongest terms. “

Bagaicha is a Jesuit-run social center, where Swamy lived in a room.
