The Uttarakhand forest department arrested a Nepalese national on Wednesday and recovered a leopard skin from him in Champawat district, forestry officials said.

Kundan Kumar, Haldwani Divisional Forestry Officer (DFO) said: “We received a tip that some people were planning to sell a leopard skin.”

“After entry, we formed a team under the leadership of the Sharda Range officer, Mahesh Singh Bisht, and we began to check in the Brahmadev forest area in Champawat. On Wednesday morning around 7 am, we found a person who behaved suspiciously, ”he said.

Kumar said: “Our team saw a Nepalese person who had a plastic bag. When he saw our team, he started to run away. The team chased him down and managed to arrest him. When we looked inside the plastic bag, we found that there was a leopard skin inside. ”

The DFO said the accused has been identified as one Balraj Sarki, a resident of the Kanchanpur district in Nepal.

“We have arrested and registered him under Section 9 and other relevant sections of the Wildlife (Protection) Act of 1972,” he added.

This is not the first incident of its kind in the Champawat district. In February, a 45-year-old person was arrested with three leopard skins.
