Cyclone Nivar, which has already intensified into a severe cyclonic storm over the southwest of the Bay of Bengal, is likely to cross the shores of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry on Wednesday night or early Thursday. It can be further intensified in a “very severe cyclonic storm” with a wind speed of 120 to 130 km / h with gusts of 145 km / h.
Nivar moved west-northwest with a speed of 6 km / h in the last six hours and centered over the southwest of the Bay of Bengal about 300 km east-southeast of Cuddalore, about 310 km east to the southeast of Puducherry and 370 km south southeast of Chennai.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), which had previously said the cyclone would make landfall at night, updated the forecast to Wednesday in its 6 a.m. bulletin. Nivar is expected to make landfall between Mamallapuram and Karaikal.
