CHANDIGARH: Punjab Prime Minister Amarinder Singh invited Navjot Singh Sidhu to lunch on Wednesday, indicating a possible patch with the former cricketer who resigned from the state cabinet after being stripped of key wallets last year.
A media adviser to the prime minister tweeted that both leaders are expected to discuss state and national politics.
“Punjab CM @capt_amarinder has invited Navjot Singh Sidhu for lunch tomorrow (Nov 25). He and @sherryontopp are expected to discuss state and national politics during the lunch meeting, “said the media adviser.
Tensions between Amarinder Singh and Sidhu had come to light in May last year when the CM accused the former cricketer of “inept handling” by the Department of Local Government, claiming that it resulted in “poor performance” by Congress in areas urban. during the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.
Sidhu had stayed away from all congressional activities after his resignation from the state cabinet.
However, he made a public appearance at a “tractor rally” against the Center’s farm laws in Moga last month, where party leader Rahul Gandhi, Amarinder Singh and others were also present.
Sidhu attended the “tractor rally” after AICC Secretary General Harish Rawat met him at his Amritsar residence.
Tensions between the two leaders appeared to have lessened when the CM praised the Amritsar MLA for the way it spoke in the assembly after the congressional government introduced a resolution and introduced bills against the farm laws last month. Earlier this month, Sidhu had attended a sit-in led by the prime minister in Delhi’s Jantar Mantar.
Harish Rawat also indicated a “role” for Sidhu in Punjab last month and dubbed him the “Rafale” of Congress.
Rawat had said that the worst critic of the MLA Congress cannot deny its usefulness. With Rawat pushing for a role for Sidhu in the state, party circles are full of speculation that Sidhu may be reinstated in the state cabinet.
