Delhi Riots: Police File Charge Sheet In Court Against Umar Khalid And Sharjeel Imam In UAPA Case
Delhi police filed a charge sheet in court here Sunday against former JNU student leader Umar Khalid and student Sharjeel Imam in a case related to the “conspiracy” behind February’s communal violence in the northeast part of the city.
The police filed the charge sheet with additional session judge Amitabh Rawat against Khalid and Imam under the relevant sections of the strict Prevention of Illegal Activities Act.
They have also been charged with rioting, illegal assembly, criminal conspiracy, murder, promoting enmity on the grounds of religion, language, caste, etc. and other sections of the Indian Penal Code.
Offenses carry a maximum death penalty.
Communal clashes had erupted in northeast Delhi on February 24 after violence between those who supported the amendments to the citizenship law and those who opposed them.
The violence left at least 53 people dead and around 200 injured.
