Congressional rumors grow, Ghulam Nabi Azad for internal polls
Days after Congress managed to win just 19 seats, the lowest tally among the four major parties in Bihar assembly polls, Rajya Sabha opposition leader Ghulam Nabi Azad said on Sunday the election was not won. adopting a “five-star culture and party leaders must be elected.”
Azad, one of 23 leaders who signed a letter to Congress President Sonia Gandhi in AugustDemanding major changes in the functioning of the party, he also said the “general impression (is) that there is no party president.”
“Both Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi said that the party’s elections should be held in October. But we said that the election should take place after six months due to Covid-19, ”he added.
The party contested the Bihar elections, which were won by a coalition of the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Janata Dal (United), or JD (U), as part of an alliance led by Rashtriya Janata Dal and comprising left-wing parties. Of the 70 seats he contested, he managed to win only 19.
Azad claimed that he did not blame Sonia or Rahul Gandh for the setback. But his criticism of the official selection process, according to some party members, is a veiled protest against the current system.
Senior leader and former Foreign Minister Salman Khurshid responded to Azad, dismissing any perception of a leadership crisis in Congress and saying that full support for Sonia and Rahul Gandhi is “evident to anyone who is not blind.”
Khurshid said public statements by congressional leaders who criticize him hurt the party, in an indirect reference to recent statements by Kapil Sibal and others.
When asked about comments from Sibal and another senior leader, P Chidambaram, on the poor performance of Congress in the Bihar elections and recent secondary polls, he said that he cannot disagree with what they have said, but he asked why someone has to go out and tell the media and the world that “we have to do this.”
“The analysis is done all the time, there is no discussion about the analysis. It will be done. The leadership, of which all these people are a part, will properly analyze what could have gone wrong, how we could have improved, and that will happen in the normal course, we do not need to talk about it in public, “he said. Khurshid, standing guest on the Congressional Work Committee (CWC), the party’s highest decision-making body.
In an exclusive interview with ANI, Azad said: “Officials must understand their responsibility. Until the moment in which the incumbents are appointed, they will not go to the bases. But if all office holders are elected, they will understand their responsibility. Right now, anyone gets a post at the party. Our people have lost their connection with the grassroots ”.
He also said: “Polls are not won with five-star culture. The problem with leaders today is that if they get a ticket to the party, they book a five-star hotel first. They will not go if there is a difficult road. Until the 5-star culture is abandoned, the election cannot be won. ”
Azad on Sunday also supported Chidambaram and Sibal’s views on the need for “hindsight” in the match. He said “it wasn’t bad, but it doesn’t mean changing top leadership either.” He argued that the “party medicine” was to hold organizational elections at different levels.
“Hindsight means that there should be a discussion about why we lost in Bihar, why we won few seats in Madhya Pradesh. And after a discussion on these, how to apply the conclusion that we get from the discussion on these issues, this is what we have to do, “said Azad.
Sibal, critical of the current state of operation of Congress, said the people of Bihar did not see Congress as an effective alternative, adding that the time for “introspection” was over. Chidambaram also expressed concern about the poll results and called for a comprehensive review of why the RJD-Congress-Left alliance lost despite being so close to victory.
“We are all concerned about the losses, especially Bihar and the results of the polls. I don’t blame the leadership of Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi. Office holders must understand that their responsibility begins with their appointment. They should love the party. I quote a couplet: ‘Ye ishq nahi aasaan, bas itna samajh lije. Ik aag ka darya hai aur doob ke jaana hai, ‘”Azad said.
“Love should be for one’s party, profession and country,” Azad added.
