Prayagraj spurious liquor death toll rises to six, seven arrested

The number of victims of alleged spurious drinking in Phulpur de Prayagraj rose to six with two more deaths on Saturday.

District Magistrate Bhanu Chandra Goswami said a man who runs a liquor store and a vendor are among those arrested in the tragedy and that it is under investigation. He said those responsible for the tragedy will not be saved.

Police Superintendent Dhawal Jaiswal said that about 10 people, who also consumed the spurious liquor, were admitted to a hospital. “A First Investigation Report has been presented and seven people have been arrested.”

Some residents of the villages of Amilia, Arwasi, Khansar and Mailhan became ill after liquor was brought to them from Amilia’s shop. Four of them died on Friday night.

District excise officer SB Modwel said the license for the store was given to a Sangeeta Jaiswal through a lottery system on July 24. “Samples of the liquor collected from the store were sent to a forensic laboratory in Lucknow for analysis.”
