NEW DELHI: Saturday’s 15th G20 summit saw Prime Minister Narendra Modi calling for a new global index for the post-corona world that would incorporate a strong emphasis on respecting nature with a spirit of stewardship with “Mother Earth” .

Addressing the summit, which was held virtually under the Saudi presidency and focused on managing the economic challenges emerging from the pandemic, Modi described Covid-19 as the greatest challenge facing the world since World War II and a major turning point in human history. .
Modi called for decisive action by the G-20, not limited to economic recovery, jobs and trade, but focused on “preserving planet Earth.”
The prime minister stressed that in recent decades, while the emphasis had been on capital and finance, the time had come to focus on “training and retraining” to create a vast pool of human talent.
“This would not only improve the dignity of citizens, but make them more resilient to face crises,” Modi said, adding that any evaluation of the new technology should be based on its impact on ease of living and quality of life. .
“He called for greater transparency in governance systems that will inspire our citizens to address shared challenges and enhance their confidence. He also said that dealing with the environment and nature as trustees rather than owners will inspire us towards a style of holistic and healthy living, a principle whose benchmark could be a per capita carbon footprint, ”the government said in a statement.
Noting that “Working from anywhere” is the new normal in the post-Covid world, he also suggested the creation of a virtual G-20 secretariat as a repository for monitoring and documentation.
The current summit is the second meeting of G20 leaders in 2020. Following the telephone conversation between the prime minister and the crown prince of Saudi Arabia, the last G20 summit was held in March 2020, where the leaders They sought to forge a coordinated global response to the pandemic.
The focus of the summit now is to ensure an inclusive, resilient and sustainable recovery from Covid-19. During the summit, leaders will discuss pandemic preparedness and ways and means to restore jobs.
