The World Health Organization (WHO) has said that nine candidate vaccines, including two from China, are currently being evaluated for inclusion in the COVAX facility. COVAX is co-chaired by Gavi, an international vaccine alliance, the Coalition for Innovations in Epidemic Preparedness (CEPI) and the (WHO). Its objective is to accelerate the development and manufacture of vaccines.
So far, the coronavirus has infected more than 54 million people worldwide and killed more than 1.3 million people, even as governments implemented strict closures and restrictions to slow the spread of the virus that originated in the Chinese city of Wuhan.
“To support the development of the BRICS vaccine research and development center, China has designated its own national center. I propose that we convene a BRICS symposium on traditional medicine to explore its role in the prevention and treatment of coronavirus,” Xi said.
He also said that China will open the BRICS association in a new industrial revolution innovation center in the Chinese city of Xiamen. “We welcome the active participation of other BRICS countries,” he said.
Xi said the BRICS countries must “overcome divisions with unity and unite the maximum global synergy to defeat the virus.”
In his speech, Xi focused on the need for BRICS countries to support multilateralism, globalization that faces the headwinds of growing nationalism in the United States and other developed countries, and advanced five proposals for the five-member bloc.
He said the BRICS countries should uphold multilateralism and safeguard world peace and stability, deepen solidarity and cooperation to jointly face the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic, defend openness and innovation to drive recovery. economic world, prioritizing people’s livelihoods and promoting sustainable development across the country. world and promote green and low carbon development and promote the harmonious coexistence of man and nature.
