Thakkar Gets Bail From Mumbai Court, May Be Released Today | India News

MUMBAI: A Metropolitan Magistrate at Mumbai Esplanade Court on Monday granted bail to Sameet Thakkar, a Nagpur resident, who was arrested by Mumbai police for his allegedly offensive tweets against Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray and his son, Aaditya Thackeray, also a minister, reports Swati Deshpande.
The court ordered his release on a cash bond of Rs 25,000 or a bond of Rs 20,000. Chandansingh Shekhawat, his defender, said Thakkar is likely to be released on Tuesday, after completing all the formalities.
Thakkar also appealed to the SC on Monday for immediate release on bail, and his lawyer Mahesh Jethmalani claimed that the Nagpur police had violated Thakkar’s fundamental rights by arresting him and displaying him in public. Nagpur police had also tied him with rope and covered his face with a black hood while presenting him to a local court, Jethmalani said. The case against him is for alleged obscenity and hate speech for posting on social media against CM and Aaditya.
