Rape Victim Set On Fire by Defendant’s Family in UP Bulandshahr Dies in Delhi Hospital
A teenage rape victim, who was allegedly set ablaze by the rapist’s family in a village in the Jahangirabad area of the Bulandshahr district of Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday morning, succumbed to injuries during treatment at Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital over late that day, police said.
The family of the deceased has accused the rapist’s uncle and other relatives of setting the girl on fire after they failed to persuade her of an engagement.
In her latest statement, the girl accused Sanjay, the rapist’s uncle, and other members of the family of setting her on fire, police said.
Later, her family also filed a murder case at the Jahangirabad Police Station against Sanjay, his wife Kajal, and five others accusing them of setting the girl on fire after failing in their efforts to convince her of an engagement despite the increasing pressure.
Bulandshahar Police Superintendent SK Singh said the girl was initially said to have set herself on fire. He said the family subsequently accused Sanjay and six other people of setting the girl on fire and a case was filed against the defendant based on the complaint. “We are investigating the charges,” said Singh, who suspended Deputy Beating Inspector Vinaykant Gautam and beat Officer Vikrant Tomar and sent SHO Vivek Sharma from the Jahangirabad Police Station to the police lines.
The SSP said that three defendants named in the FIR have been arrested and that raids are underway to arrest the remaining defendants.
Singh said a rape case was recorded in the girl’s complaint on August 15 and that the defendant was arrested the same day. Singh added that the defendant worked as a garden keeper in the girls’ village.
Earlier Monday, a 19-year-old law student, who was allegedly gang-raped on October 16, died by suicide in the Anoopshahar area of the district.
