Mufti Opposes Eviction of Nomadic Tribes, Says Dangerous Outcome | India News

SRINAGAR: Head of the People’s Democratic Party of Jammu and Kashmir Mehbooba Mufti on Monday he warned the government against evicting members of the Gujjar-Bakerwal community from forest areas in the UT, saying that if they are harassed, the consequences would be dangerous.
He visited the upper reaches of Pahalgam in the Anantnag district of southern Kashmir on Monday and met people whose ‘dhoks’ (temporary shelters) were demolished by authorities as part of a campaign against the invasion. “This is part of the illegal process initiated by the Center at J&K after the repeal of Article 370, according to which people who live here as nomads – Gujjars, Bakerwals and whose ancestors have been living here for centuries, are being evicted. ”. Mehbooba said. He said that after the Center made changes to the domicile law, it wants to bring people from all over the country to J&K and evict its own residents.
“This is not happening here (in Kashmir) only. If they see in Jammu, in places like Bhatindi, Sujwan, Chatta, wherever there is Muslim population, the Gujjar, the Bakerwals, they (the government) identify them and evict them. Where will people go in winter? “, Said.
Describing the Gujjar-Bakerwal community as very loyal and peace-loving, he said: “They are being forcibly evicted. I want to tell the Center not to harass them, otherwise you will have to face dangerous consequences ”
