JAMMU: In an attempt to boost economic activities such as manufacturing and services, the Jammu and Kashmir administration has transferred 25,000 kanals (1 kanal = 5445 square feet) of state land to the department of industries and commerce. The measure is in line with the Industrial Policy-2016, which envisaged the creation of a 20,000-kanal land bank at J&K over a 10-year period, with an emphasis on locations outside of urban areas.
“Of the total land transferred, 17,000 kanals are in the Jammu division, while 8,000 kanals are in the Kashmir division. This land bank consists of mostly sterile, non-forest, non-agricultural state land parcels, “said an official, adding:” It has been identified by the tax authorities in consultation with the department of industry and will be used for the development of polygons industrials for the next few years. ”
Before 2018, the department of industries and commerce had established 49 industrial estates in J&K with a total area of 31,448 kanals. This new land bank will be added to these existing industrial estates.
The lands of the industrial estates are awarded on a lease basis through an appropriate process provided for in the industrial policy for the development of industrial activity. Outside of the new land bank, no patch of land has yet been allocated to any entrepreneur as it has yet to be developed which will take some time.
Over the past two years, only 453 units have been installed on government land at J&K. These units have been allocated a total of 1,371 kanales of leased land in J&K industrial areas after following the procedure and guidelines prescribed in the industrial policy.
With the announcement of industry-friendly packages by the Indian government, the region witnessed an outbreak of industrial activity at J&K, which resulted in the creation and expansion of new industrial estates in Samba, Udhampur, Rangreth, Khunmoh and Lassipora.
