BJP should create bigger and better varsity under the name Vivekananda instead of renaming JNU: Congress | India News

NEW DELHI: Congress said Tuesday that the NDA government should create a new, bigger and better university on behalf of Swami Vivekananda instead of renaming the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in the national capital.
Congressional senior spokesperson Ajay Maken said that it is not right for the BJP to change the name of an existing university and that it should instead set an example of how to create a good new university.
“We do not believe in changing the names of existing universities by replacing a name with the name of another icon. It would be better if the BJP created a new university in the name of Swami Vivekananda, which should be good and bigger than JNU. The existing university it’s not development, “he told reporters when asked about the dispute.
BJP General Secretary CT Ravi suggested changing the name of the JNU in Delhi to Swami Vivekananda.
The varsity team had seen a dispute break out on campus after Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually unveiled a life-size statue of Swami Vivekananda on the JNU campus last Thursday, with students staging their protests.
In November 2019, the JNU administration filed a police complaint stating that the statue, which was covered by a saffron veil, had been defaced and that messages “addressed to a political party” had been written.
