Twenty Provincial Armed Police (PAC) staff members who returned from the Bihar elections a week ago tested positive for Covid-19 in the Rudrapur area of the US state of Nagar. They were admitted to a Covid Care Hospital in Rudrapur, authorities said.
“A company from our battalion was sent to Bihar to participate in the elections in October. When the staff returned from service, their samples were collected and sent for testing for Covid-19. Twenty police officers out of 100 have tested positive for Covid-19. They have been admitted to a Covid Care Center in Rudrapur, ”said Dadan Pal, commander of the 31st PAC Battalion in Rudrapur.
Five companies from the PAC and the Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB) were dispatched to hold assembly elections to Bihar. A company from the 31st PAC Battalion returned to Rudrapur after electoral duty. Its staff were medically examined in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic and samples were collected on November 11.
“All personnel were quarantined in the barracks after health officials collected their samples. As so far 20 members of the security personnel have tested positive, contact tracing has begun and samples are being collected from the families of those who tested positive, to analyze them as a precautionary measure and to prevent the infection from spreading further ” said Pal.
Rudrapur has been the base of Battalions 31 and 46 of the PAC for years. Both battalions have good records in fighting terrorism in the former UP, in maintaining law and order in the state and other states, and in extending their services in disaster management, an official said.
