Murder case brought against district tax collector in Odisha
Odisha police on Sunday brought a murder case against Malkangiri district tax collector Manish Agrawal and three other people on the order of a judicial magistrate in the case of the collector’s personal assistant’s death under mysterious circumstances, police said .
The order was given in the mysterious death case of Debanarayan Panda, PA of the collector.
“We have formed an SIT in this case following the orders of the court. An SP deputy has been put in charge of the investigation, ”said a senior police official. Agrawal did not comment on the developments.
Earlier this month, Banaja Panda, the wife of Debanarayan Panda, former personal assistant to the Malkangiri District Collector Manish Agarwal, had transferred the SDJM court in Malkangiri, requesting the filing of the murder case against the IAS officer and others. three alleging that her husband could have been killed since he allegedly learned of the involvement of the debt collector and others in acts of corruption.
Citing a lack of transparency and efficiency in the investigation process, he claimed that the CCTV images from the district collector’s office had been tampered with.

On December 27 of last year, the debt collector’s personal assistant had disappeared from his office. The next day, his body was recovered from the Satiguda Dam in the city of Malkangiri. His motorcycle and helmet were found near the dam. Although the police had initially recorded a suicide case and then an unnatural death case in the incident, the relatives of the deceased had alleged that they were being threatened by the police while the investigation was being carried out.
In January this year, Congress in Malkangiri had called for a 24-hour bandh demanding the arrest of the district collector for the case.
