MUMBAI: The criminal branch of the Mumbai police investigating the TRP tampering scam summoned Republic TV Chief Operating Officer (COO) Priya Mukherjee on Tuesday, November 17. Police said they called her in connection with information obtained about the activities of Ghanshyam Singh (44), the head of distribution for ARG Outlier Media Pvt Ltd (which operates Republic TV). Singh, who was arrested last week on charges of distributing money to other defendants in the scam to increase the channel’s TRPs, was presented in holiday court on Friday and also remained in police custody until November 16.
Police said they found that Singh, in collusion with cable operators and Multiple System Operators (MSO), ran Republic TV on dual logical channel numbers (LCN) or two frequencies, which is a violation of the guidelines of the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). When a channel runs on multiple frequencies, enjoy multiple slots across all genres; for example, a news channel might also appear in the movies or entertainment categories. Singh allegedly paid the cable operators and MSO money to run the channel on two frequencies, which helped them manipulate the TRPs. We want to investigate the financial aspects … ”, said an official who did not want to be identified.
Congress: ‘Direct link’ between BJP and Republic TV
On Friday, Congress alleged that BJP and Republic TV had a “direct link,” and Anvay Naik’s suicide case was deliberately suppressed during Devendra Fadnavis’ tenure as CM. Congressional spokesman Sachin Sawant, at a time when Congress was making efforts to bring justice to the Naik family, BJP doubted the integrity of the Naik family. “We are surprised by the campaign launched against the female members of the Naik family. Even now, efforts are being made to suppress any further research, ”Sawant said. The leader of the BJP, Kirit Somaiya, had pointed out land deals between the Thackeray and the Naik family. Sawant said that BJP has been silent about how the family was misled.
