The BIS will soon come under the Ministry of Commerce | India News

NEW DELHI: The consumer affairs department is initiating a proposal for the transfer of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) to the Ministry of Commerce, just eight months after it opposed a similar measure from the Ministry of Commerce.
While opinions are divided on the merits of the proposal, the PMO has sought details about the BIS and its functions. The sources said the process began after Union Minister Piyush Goyal ordered department officials to take steps to transfer BIS to the Commerce Ministry. He took over the Ministry of Food and Consumer Affairs, as well as railways and commerce after the death of Ram Vilas Paswan. Paswan had opposed Goyal’s ministry proposal. “It is up to the government to take a call. This only requires a change in the assignment of business rules, ”said a source.
Some former BIS officials told TOI that the proposal has been pending for a long time, as the agency is primarily responsible for developing standards for industrial products.
