Kerala police arrested four Iranian nationals suspected of being part of an international gang of thieves on Wednesday from a hotel in the state capital. Police said they were arrested when they planned to rob an exchange house in Thiruvananthapuram.

After initial questioning, police said they were part of a 24-member gang involved in many robberies at financial institutions and ATMs. Shortly after his photos were uploaded to the official Kerala police website, many complaints came to light.

Two days ago, they allegedly cheated a shopkeeper in Cherthala, Alappuzha district, out of 50,000 rupees. The police suspect that they may have obtained some local support to carry out their activities. They were later handed over to the police in Alappuzha district.

According to the police, all four had Iranian passports and were in the country for more than eight months and two of them had stayed after the expiration of their visa period. Their visa marks show that they visited Nepal and Thailand. A senior official said the Delhi and Mumbai police contacted them for more details. He said the investigation to capture other gang members was progressing with the help of other states and central agencies.
