The Chhattisgarh government extended the latest date for registering rice purchases to November 10-17 on Wednesday on the instructions of Prime Minister Bhupesh Baghel, an official said. The acquisition will begin on December 1.

“… instructions have been sent to all divisional commissioners, collectors, registrars, cooperative societies,” said the official.

Agriculture Minister Ravindra Chaubey blamed the shortage of jute bags in the market due to Covid-19 for the delay in the purchase.

In November 2019, the congressional government announced that it will purchase rice at Rs1,835 per quintal, the rate set by the Center. The government said it will find a way for farmers to get 2,500 rupees per quintal. He released Rajiv Gandhi Nyay Yojna to pay the remaining amount in four installments.

The opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) said farmers will suffer losses due to the delay in acquisitions, as the harvest started 15 days ago. “The intention of the congressional government is to buy less rice from the farmers of the state and therefore they are making excuses that there is a shortage of bags of rice. If the state government does not take notice, soon the farmers will join us, ”said BJP leader Gauri Shankar Srivas.
