Asean Has Always Been At The Core Of Our Act East Policy, Says Prime Minister Modi At Virtual Summit | India News

NEW DELHI: India and Asean’s strategic partnership builds on our shared historical, geographic and cultural heritage, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in his virtual address at the 17th Asean-India summit on Thursday.
“There are many similarities between India’s’ Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative ‘and Asean’s’ Indo-Pacific Outlook,” he said.
Stating that the group is central to India’s Pacific vision, Modi said that “Asean has been at the core of our Act East policy.” At the summit attended by 10 nations, Prime Minister Modi said that “a cohesive and responsive Asean is needed for the security and growth of everyone in the region.”
The Prime Minister also stressed that all kinds of connectivity between India and Asean is one of the country’s top priorities.
Together with Modi, the 17th India-Asean Summit was co-chaired by Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc. Key areas on the agenda included reviewing the Asean-India strategic partnership and taking stock of progress in connectivity, maritime cooperation, trade and commerce, education and capacity building, the MEA said in a statement earlier.
The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) is one of the most important groups in the region. Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Brunei, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar and Cambodia are its members. India, the United States, China, Japan and Australia are their dialogue partners. The summit took place amid the confrontation between India and China in eastern Ladakh.
