Firecracker Ban: Vijay Goel Sends Memo To NGT, Seeks Instructions For Delhi Government To Compensate Traders
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Vijay Goel presented a memorandum to the National Green Court (NGT) on Wednesday urging it to order the Delhi government to compensate traders who have suffered losses due to the ban on firecrackers in the city.
The state government should have made the decision to ban the firecrackers in time, the former Union minister said.
After a meeting held to review the Covid-19 situation in Delhi, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced on November 5 a ban on firecrackers in the city.
The blanket ban, including green cookies, restricts the sale, purchase and use of firecrackers until November 30.
“The Delhi government issued licenses to sell firecrackers. His environment minister said green cookies would be allowed and then the government banned firecrackers. The NGT should order the Delhi government to compensate (merchants) for storing crackers for sale during festivals, ”Goel said.
In his memorandum submitted to NGT Registrar General Ashu Garg, the BJP leader also suggested various steps to control pollution in Delhi.
On Sunday, Goel had organized a dharna in Jantar Mantar to press his demand.
He said the merchants had bought thousands of rupees worth of cookies after obtaining the licenses. Due to the ban, they may suffer huge economic losses that the Delhi government should compensate.
