Oxford Coronavirus Vaccine: NRI Volunteer Part of Vaccine Trials in the UK | World News

NEW DELHI: When Deepak Paliwal, a 42-year-old UK pharmaceutical consultant, signed up to volunteer for the Covid-19 vaccine trial at Oxford University, he found little support among friends and family. “My family, including my wife, was concerned about my decision. They told me not to become a guinea pig. But this is something I had to do to help the world fight this pandemic, even if it meant risking my life, “said Paliwal.
So on April 16, Paliwal, who is the only known Indian-born volunteer to receive the experimental jab, joined a team of approximately 1,000 people to take part in the Phase 2 clinical trials of the ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 vaccine. .
Speaking to TOI on Tuesday, a day after it became known that the vaccine had produced a robust immune response in volunteers, Paliwal said he was proud of his contribution and so was his wife, Pearl D’Souza. “I had doubts since the vaccine had only been tested on animals. People warned me it could affect my fertility, others said that researchers could implant a chip that would track my movements, “said Paliwal, who hails from Jaipur and moved to the UK in 2010.

It wasn’t just his family warning him. Some researchers also told Paliwal that he was familiar with that there was a small chance that the antibodies activated by the vaccine might make him more susceptible to Covid-19. “But I did not hesitate. I had made my decision. Also, I wanted to represent the Asian community in an investigation that meant saving humanity, “said Paliwal, who completed her postgraduate degree at the University of Manipal.
On May 11, Paliwal received the vaccine and walked home after three hours. It had to meet several guidelines: attending study visits, not traveling by public transport to the center, and allowing researchers to study and control behaviors. Since then, Paliwal has had several follow-up visits and will remain under observation for a year.
