Deaths from the virus also increased with 146 reported by states on Tuesday, the third highest to date. Maharashtra accounted for more than half of the deaths, reporting its highest number in a single day of 76-43 in Mumbai alone, followed by Gujarat with 25.
Maharashtra also reported more than 2,000 new cases for the third consecutive day. Of the 2,127 recent infections, 1,411 were detected in Covid-ravaged Mumbai. This was the second highest case count of Maharashtra and Mumbai in one day.
Meanwhile, the number of people who have recovered from the infection crossed 40,000 on Tuesday, increasing to 42,071 at the end of the day, bringing the national virus recovery rate to 39.8%.
Following the trend of the past few days, Tamil Nadu reported the second highest number of new infections among all states, with 688 new cases. People returning to their home in the state are quickly joining Tamil Nadu’s Covid-19 count with 23 passengers from just one flight from Dubai that tested positive on Tuesday. Of the new cases, 87 had come from abroad or other states. Chennai remained the access point with 552 new cases.
Among the five states where the day’s new cases peaked, Delhi showed the largest increase. The national capital added up to 500 cases to bring its total account to 10,554.
In addition to Delhi, Rajasthan (338 new cases), Uttar Pradesh (292), Karnataka (149) and Assam (46) broke their respective records of new cases in one day.
In UP, the Covid-19 wave of migrants became more marked with the arrival of more cases. About 40% of the total cases reported on Tuesday were related to returning migrants. The Basti district took the lead with 44 new cases, and DM Ashutosh Niranjan confirmed that all cases were of migrant workers in quarantine in Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya after their return from Maharashtra. Five people died from the infection in Rajasthan, two in Jaipur and one in Kota, Nagaur and Sikar, with a total of 143. The total number of cases amounts to 5,845. Gujarat added 395 positive cases and 25 deaths, bringing the state’s count to 12,141 and the number of victims to 719. With 239 patients discharged in the last 24 hours, the total number of discharged patients has increased to 5,043. Ahmedabad continued to dominate cases and deaths with 262 or 66% of total cases and 21 or 84% of total deaths.
