German Chancellor Angela Merkel quarantined after doctor tested positive for coronavirus
Merkel’s spokeswoman said the 65-year-old German chancellor was briefed on the doctor’s test shortly after holding a press conference on Sunday announcing new measures to curb the spread of the virus.
Her spokeswoman, Steffen Seibert, said Merkel had received a preventive vaccine on Friday against the pneumococcal infection.
Seibert said in a statement that Merkel will undergo “regular testing” in the coming days and will continue her work from home for now.
Merkel had previously expressed her gratitude to Germans who followed the rules of social distancing, saying it was important to stay at least 1.5 meters (5 feet) away to reduce the likelihood of infection.
