Northeast Delhi riots: population density, narrow lanes restricted movement of forces, says MoS home in Rajya Sabha | Delhi News

NEW DELHI: High population density, as well as narrow lanes and streets in northeast Delhi areas had restricted the movement of forces and vehicles during the riots last month, the Interior Ministry said in Rajya Sabha on Wednesday.

MoS (home) G Kishan Reddy, in written response to a question, said the Delhi Police acted quickly and professionally, ensuring that the disturbance was contained and did not spread to other parts of Delhi.

Responding to a different question about whether the Modi government had made any effort to end the Shaheen Bagh protest in Delhi, Reddy informed the House that the Delhi Police held several meetings at different levels with various stakeholders, including the Committees. They love, Resident Welfare Associations, Market Welfare Associations and the general public residing in the area, in this regard.

However, the protest in Shaheen Bagh still continues.

Reddy said that as reported by Delhi police, as of March 12, 2020, 763 cases had been registered, including 51 cases under the Arms Law; 3,304 people arrested / detained; 52 people killed and 545 wounded; and 226 houses and 487 stores damaged in Delhi riots. The dead included a police officer and intelligence personnel, and more than 100 police officers suffered injuries while containing the violence.
