FALSE ALERT: No, the Hindus did not bury the Muslim woman, the living child
Nazir Ahemd, a member of the British parliament of Pakistani origin, tweeted a disturbing video showing a woman and a child being exhumed saying it is a horrible video of a mother and child buried alive in India by ‘fascists’. The tweet said: “At war: horrible video of a mother and child buried alive in India by a fascist. Thank God they are recovered (sic).”
The tweet, now deleted, was retweeted more than 3,500 times and the video was viewed more than 70,000 times.
The same video was tweeted by retired Pakistan army commander Muhammad Arif, saying: “Muslims are being buried alive in India.”
This tweet, still intact, has been retweeted more than 3,100 times and the video has already been viewed more than 84,000 times.
Times Fact Check does not share the video due to its disturbing visual effects.
The video is of an incident in a village in northern Dinajpur, in West Bengal, since January 2020.
A man, Akbar Ali, was accused of murdering his wife and son and burying the bodies. According to a report by Ei Samay, the locals destroyed Ali’s house and set it on fire. It is said that Ali fled the town.
There is no community angle to the incident.
VERIFICATION AND METHODOLOGY
Times Fact Check noted that the people seen in the video speak Bengali. We contacted Ei Samay’s digital editor, Rajat Mondal, and shared the video with him.
Mondal directed us to
a report published in Ei Samay
on January 31, 2020, entitled ‘The young man murdered his wife and children’, when translated using Google Translator.
The image used in the report is a screenshot of the video that is now shared with a statement that “the fascists buried women and children alive in India.”
The report says that a man, Akbar Ali, was accused of murdering his wife and son, and burying the bodies. The bodies were exhumed in the presence of a magistrate. The locals, enraged, destroyed Ali’s house and set it on fire. Ali, according to the report, fled the village.
Times Fact Check found that Twitter users, mostly Pakistani, share a disturbing video of an incident in northern Dinajpur in West Bengal, with claims such as’ fascists buried women and children alive in India ‘and’ Muslims are being buried alive in India ‘, suggesting a community angle to the incident.
There is no community angle to the incident. The statements are, therefore, false.
