The entrance door to the Motera stadium collapses before Trump’s visit | India News


AHMEDABAD: A day before the visit of the president of the United States, Donald Trump, to Ahmedabad, an improvised VVIP entrance gate erected outside the newly built cricket stadium in the Motera area collapsed due to winds gustled on Sunday by in the morning, an official said.

The entire incident was recorded by a viewer and broadcast on local television channels.

The makeshift entry door was made of welded steel rods and covered with flexible banners.

After some time, a part of another makeshift gate structure at the main entrance of the stadium also collapsed due to windy weather, another official said.

No one was injured in both incidents and work was underway to put the structures back in place, he said.

“The entrance gate (VVIP) collapsed while manufacturing work was underway. It was not a major incident. No one was injured in the incident,” said Special Police Commissioner, Crime Branch, Ajay Tomar.

President Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi will participate in a tour here on Monday and then board the ‘Namaste Trump’ event at the Sardar Patel stadium in the Motera area, where more than one lakh of people are expected to be present.

The stadium has already received the ‘Use of the building’ permit from the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, an official said earlier.

It is the largest stadium in the world with the capacity to house 1.10 lakh spectators.

The stadium has been rebuilt after demolishing the former that had a capacity of 49,000 spectators.
