Thai woman gives birth in the air, the flight makes an emergency landing at Kolkata airport | Kolkata News


KOLKATA: A flight from Qatar Airways from Doha to Bangkok made an emergency landing at Kolkata airport on Tuesday after a woman delivered a baby in the air with the help of flight attendants, airport authorities said.

This happened around 3 am when the plane was flying over Kolkata, they said.


The QR 830 flight captain contacted Air Traffic Control (ATC) officials at Kolkata airport, reported the matter and requested permission for an emergency landing.

The woman went into labor when the flight crossed Nagpur. He then informed the crew that in turn brought the matter to the pilot’s notice, an official said.

The pilot then sent an emergency message to the Calcutta ATC, informing them about the medical emergency on board and requested permission to land at the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport (NSCBI).

ATC officials gave their authorization for the emergency landing, after which the plane, with 352 passengers and crew on board, landed safely at 3.15 in the morning, said the official of the Airports Authority of India ( AAI).

The flight attendants of the women played good Samaritan helping the woman in the delivery of the baby in the air.

The Thai citizen, along with her newborn son, were taken to a private hospital for medical assistance, the AAI official said, adding that she was admitted to the hospital around 4.25 in the morning.

Qatar Airways flight took off to Bangkok at 5.50 a.m.
