LUCKNOW: At least 20 passengers traveling on a private bus were charred to death in UP’s Kannauj district on Friday night after the bus collided head-on with a truck carrying flammable material.

The accident took place on the GT Road section of Delhi-Kanpur road when the bus was going to Jaipur from Kannauj.

Police said about 70 passengers were travelling on the bus and fatalities could get on, as many of them were not yet counted.

A high-ranking police officer said at least 15 passengers were charred to death, but their identities could not be immediately verifiable.

Another 21 passengers were admitted to a local hospital with severe burn injuries. Passengers were unable to escape as they were asleep with doors and windows closed.

At 15:35, the ID of the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) tweeted that CM Yogi Adityanath had taken knowledge of the accident and instructed the district magistrate and Kannauj’s police superintendent to arrive at the site immediately and provide assistance to affected passengers. The CM also announced an ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh each to the relatives of the deceased and Rs 50,000 each to the wounded.

Police inspector general (Kanpur rank) Mohit Agarwal told reporters that the fire was controlled and that a relief operation was underway. Agarwal also said the exact number of victims could not be determined, but at least 15 were fully charred.

Agarwal said prima facie looked like the bus collided with the truck coming in the opposite direction, causing an explosion.

The truck was carrying some highly flammable substance. Up to 15 tenders of fire rushed to contain the flames.
