Trump announces powerful economic sanctions against Iran: Highlights of speech

U.S. President Donald Trump addressed the nation Wednesday after Iran’s retaliatory missile strikes on U.S. bases in Iraq following the assassination of General Qassim Suleimani. Here are the highlights of his address:

* Iran will never be allowed to have a nuclear weapon as long as I am President

* Iran is one of the main sponsors of terrorism

* U.S. to impose powerful economic sanctions on Iran

* No Americans were wounded in last night’s attack by Iran. All our soldiers are safe and only minimal damage was suffered on our military bases

* Iran seems to be standing, which is a very good thing for the world

* Iran must abandon its nuclear ambitions and end its support for terrorism. We must work together to make a deal with Iran to make the world a more peaceful place

* Iran can be a great country. Peace and stability cannot prevail in the Middle East as long as it continues to encourage violence

* We want the people of Iran to have a great future full of prosperity and harmony. America is ready to embrace peace

* The world must unify and send a message to the regime of Iran that its campaign of terror will not be able to move forward

* NATO must become more involved in the Middle East process

* Gen Qassim Suleimani fed civil wars around the world and brutally murdered thousands of our troops. He had been planning further attacks on the U.S.

* We have killed the savage leader of ISIS, Al-Baghdadi. He was a monster. He was trying to rebuild the ISIS caliphate and it failed. Thousands of ISIS terrorists have been killed under the administration

* Iran sang death to america despite our help. Then he went on a wave of terror funded by the nuclear deal and created hell in the region
