KOLKATA: BJP MP Swapan Dasgupta, who was scheduled to give a lecture Wednesday at Visva Bharati University on the Citizenship Amendment Act, faced protests from CPM-backed SFI members who also stalled the program.

The Rajya Sabha MP was to speak in “The CAA-2019: Understanding and Interpretation” as part of the Visva Bharati Lecture Series at the Lipika Auditorium of the varsity.

The program was scheduled at 3:30 p.m. and was to be chaired by the vice chancellor of the varsity, Bidyut Chakraborty.

However, as soon as Dasgupta arrived at the campus the students began to protest against him.

The leader of the Varsity SFI unit, Somnath Sau, said students will not allow anyone who “promotes hatred among communities” to spread propaganda on the floor of Visva Bharati, which represents Rabindranath Tagore’s ideals.

“We will continue our protests against the BJP and Hindutva forces,” he added.

The BJP leader in a tweet said: “How does it feel to have a mob attacking a peaceful meeting in CAA students and intimidation? This is what’s happening with a meeting I’m now running in Vishwa Bharati. Locked in the room now with the mob outside (sic).”

A city teacher said Dasgupta was kept in a guesthouse as the turmoil continued. However, the authorities of Visva Bharati University were not available for comment.

Visva Bharati, founded by Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore in 1921, is a central university.
