US-Iran tension: Jaishankar holds talks with Pompeo, Highlights Indian betting, News -India concerns
The discussion with his Us counterpart comes amid spiral tensions between the United States and Iran over the assassination of Iranian military commander Qassim Suleimani.
“He had a telephone discussion with the Secretary of State @SecPompeo on developments in the Gulf region. He highlighted India’s betting and concerns,” Jaishankar tweeted.
The foreign minister also had a conversation with his Iranian counterpart Javad Zarif and said India remained deeply concerned about tension levels in the region.
Jaishankar separately discussed the tense situation with Oman’s Foreign Minister Yusuf Alawi and his UAE counterpart, Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
Major Gen Suleimani (62), the head of Iran’s elite Al-Quds force and architect of its regional security apparatus, was killed when a U.S. drone fired missiles at a convoy leaving Baghdad International Airport earlier friday. The attack also killed the deputy chief of Iraq’s powerful paramilitary force Hashed al-Shaabi.
Suleimani’s assassination was the most dramatic escalation to date in spiraling tensions between Iran and the United States.
Reacting to the death of a senior Iranian commander by the United States, India had said Friday that rising tensions had alarmed the world and claimed that peace, stability and security in the region is of paramount importance to him.
In a statement, the Foreign Ministry had said that India was systematically advocating for moderation and that it continued to do so, and it was vital that the situation did not escalate further.
