Jan 9 (TruthDive) : Day 4 of the Aircel Chennai Open – India’s only ATP tournament, saw long time friends turned foe, Paes and Bhupati fight it out for a spot in the doubles semi final, a match in which Paes and his partner Raven Klaasen came from a set down to overcome their opponents in 75 minutes 1-6, 6-1, 10-7.
If stats could prove one wrong, we need to look no further than this match as Bhupathi and Myneni served 5 aces to the one by Paes and Klaasen, saved 80% of break points to their 75%, won 16 first return points against 6 of the other, yet ended up on the losing side.
Wawrinka’s journey in the doubles play came to an end as he and his partner Agut lost to Purav Raja and Shamasdin 6-7, 6-4, 4-10 in a match which lasted an hour and 21 minutes.
In the singles draw, sixth seed Yen- Hsun Lu overcame Busta’s challenge by defeating him 6-4, 6-4 to move to the quarter finals. Busta had something to cheer about in the doubles draw, as he in the company of Lopez defeated Berankis and Pavic 6-0, 0-6, 10-4.
Fifth Seed Lopez did not have an easy outing as Hsun Lu as he was made to sweat it out for 2 hours and 5 minutes before he could defeat his Japanese opponent Tatsuma Ito 6-7, 6-2, 6-0. It was a wonderful game as Lopez had to shrug off the disappointment of losing the first set to win the next two.
Third Seed Bautistaagut sent Gojowczyk packing in just 70 minutes as he lost only 5 games to close the match out 6-3, 62.
The upset of the day was for second seeded Feliciano Lopez as Aljaz Bedene ended his run and his dreams of winning the title with a 6-4, 6-4 victory.
Day 5 will see Wawrinka meet Muller while Paes will be in action against Busta and Lopez.
