Clean India campaign – Kamal Haasan pitches in

Chennai, Nov 7(Truthdive): All India Kamal Haasan Narpani Iyakkam has joined hands with the Environmental Foundation of India to adopt and clean 25 lakes across Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry, as a part of the Clean India Campaign. The places chosen include Pudukottai, Sirkazhi, Chidambaram, Pondicherry, Chengalpet, Kancheepuram, Tirutani, Vellore, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Erode, Elampillai, Kumarapalayam, Pollachi, Udumalapet, Rajapalayam, Srivilliputtur, Tirunelveli, Ambasamudram, Nagercoil, Kanyakumari, Ramanathapuram, Karaikudi, Aranthangi and Chennai.

Environmentalist Foundation of India adds, cleaning India’s fresh water bodies is critical and needs to be done on a war footing. All our water bodies are being converted into sewer drains and dump yards with everything ranging from domestic to industrial waste getting dumped in them. This has to change and the larger society needs to understand the significance of conserving these water bodies.

These are not just water holding tanks but are critical habitats with several dependent life forms. A lake is home to aviary, aquatic, amphibians, reptiles and more. We share this planet with all other life forms and we need to be responsible towards our natural resources.

Kamal HaasanEnvironmentalist Foundation of India has been cleaning Madhambakkam lake in Chennai since 2012. They have done this 24 times and have restored almost 60% of the lake. For the 25th time, they started cleaning today and All India Kamal Haasan Narpani Iyakkam joined hands with them in this initiative. Kamal Haasan was personally involved in this activity today.

This is a first of its kind statewide lake cleaning initiative. The entire effort will be scientific and sustainable with purely voluntary motives. Efforts will be made to reach out to the general public to volunteer for the cause at large.
