India Vs West Indies – West Indies defeat India by 124 runs (Scorecard)

Oct 10 () : The West Indian team finally decided to play keeping their differences over their pay structure aside and they delivered big time by giving a 124 run hiding to India in the first ODI of the 5-match series at Kochi.

Dhoni invited the opposition to bat first as he felt dew might be a factor during the evening. The West Indian team saw Marlon Samuels get back into the team after a gap of 7 months and they also had to live with the fact that Sunil Narine had to head back home due to the bowling action issue which cropped up during the Champions League T20 series.

Shami drew first blood as he got rid of the dangerous DJ Bravo who hit 4 boundaries in his short stay at the crease. A 64 run partnership for the second wicket put the team on track as the scoring rate hovered around 5.4. Just when Smith was looking to get to his 50, he was bowled by Jadeja for a well made 46.

Bravo was the second batsmen, Smith the first, to fall after hitting the bowler for a Six, Mishra the bowler this time. With the score on 120, Ramdin joined Samules in the middle and both the batsmen forged a 165 run partnership for the fourth wicket, the best for West Indies against India.

The partnership was built in just 23 overs, at a scoring rate of 7 runs per over. The spinners who were expected to bamboozle the West Indian batsmen were in for a surprise as Jadeja and Amit Mishra were taken apart for 130 runs in 20 overs with only 2 wickets to their name.

Samuels scored his second century against India, the sixth of his career while Ramdin played a big role with 61 of just 59 deliveries. The batsmen had six hits over the fence between them which helped up the run rate. Mohammed Shami hit back with some late order wickets as he ended up with 4 wickets but not before being taken apart by the batsmen for 66 runs in his 9 overs. The 30 extras the Indian bowlers gave helped West Indies post a formidable 321 for the loss of 6 wickets.

The Indian openers started positively and when things looked good, Rahane was needlessly run out after adding 49 runs with Dhawan. Kohli who has been out of touch lately was caught at 3rd slip position as he tried to defend a delivery heading towards the stumps. Rayudu soon followed and the golden boy of the Champions League , Raina, was out bowled for a duck.

Dhawan scored his 50 as wickets kept stumbling around him and once his skipper Dhoni was dismissed with 114 on the board, it looked all over for India. The wickets fell quickly as the team was reduced to 155 for 9 and it was only the 42 run partnership for the last wicket by Jadeja and Shami that helped India avoid the heaviest defeat against West Indies.
