Sep 20() : In the Group B encounter at Ranchi between Northern Districts and a depleted Cape Cobras, the District’s Knights reigned supreme by 33 run victory under D/L method as rain intervened in the 8th over of the Cobras chase of 207.
The Cobras won the toss and as dew was expected later on in the innings , they opted to bowl first without the services of Dale Steyn and Sunil Naraine who would have been part of their team, had it not been the CLT20 where the IPL teams have a first choice of the players due to the player agreement.
KS Williamson, who already has made his presence felt in the qualifying round, played remarkably well to score his first T20 century. A player considered as only fit for the longer version of the game due to his impeccable text book shots; this has been a major boost. He averages nearly 40 with a SR of 137 in 2014 in this format.
He scored a lot of twos behind the stumps using the pace of the bowlers and when Philander banged it short in the 4th over, came down the pitch but ended up edging the delivery over fine leg for a six.
Peterson was the bowler to suffer initially as he was taken apart for 17 runs in the 9th over as Williamson hit him for a boundary and followed up with a six over the bowler’s head. By the end of the 10th over, the opening pair of Williamson and Devcich had added 93 runs with 10 boundaries and 2 sixes between them.
The 100 of the innings and the partnership was brought up in the 11th over which also saw both batsmen score their 50’s. Williamson reached his 3rd fifty of the tournament in just 25 deliveries with five 2’s, five boundaries and 2 sixes. The pair scored 17 runs off Kemp’s first over, the 12th of the innings. Only a run out in the 14th over helped break the partnership on 140 runs as Devcich was caught short of the crease for a well made 67.
Kemp was in for further treatment as Watling scored 2 boundaries and a six in three consecutive deliveries making it another 17 run over for Kemp. Williamson continued to find the gaps and score quickly as he got to his century in 48 deliveries in the final over of the innings with a stunning six .
Requiring to score 207 to win at a run rate of 10.4 from the first delivery, the Cobras got off to the worst start possible as they lost van Zyl in the first delivery to Boult. Tight bowling from Boult and Southee made things difficult for the Cobras as they were able to score only 9 off the first 3 overs.
Amla’s wicket inside the power play did not help things any better as they finished the 6th over at 38/2. Rain intervened in the 8th over, to bring the match to a premature end and saved the Cobras a painful loss as the D/L method took care of the results with the Knights declared winners by 33 runs.
