Sep 18 () : Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) won their 10th consecutive T20 game to defeat Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the opening match of the Champions League T20 (CLT20) match played at Hyderabad.
Gautham Gambhir invited Dhoni and his team to bat first after winning the toss as both captains felt that it will be a high scoring game looking at the pitch. KKR could have got to a superb start had Yusuf Pathan held on to the catch offered by Smith in the 4th ball of the innings.
The opening pair started positively scoring 2 boundaries each in the first 4 overs before Chawla accounted for Smith for 20 off 13 deliveries. Pathan then accounted for McCullum in the 7th over to leave CSK at 53 for 2 in 7 overs.
After 3 boundaries in three deliveries post the wicket of McCullum, Pathan and Chawla bowled in tandem reigning in both Faf du Plessis and Raina, as there were no boundaries scored for 25 deliveries. The pressure got on to the batsmen as Raina was dismissed by Narine for 28.
Chawla, who bowled very well, got Faf du Plessis stumped by Bisla in the very next over reducing CSK to 83/4 in 13 overs. Thanks to some late order hitting by Dhoni, the team was able to post a competitive 157/4 in 20 overs, definitely a 20-25 run deficit from what they had planned.
KKR got off to a disastrous start as Nehra accounted for Gambhir and Pandey in consecutive deliveries in the 3rd over of the innings. If that was not enough, Pathan was caught by F du Plessis for 1 off the bowling off Mohit Sharma in the very next over.
Bisla who had a memorable final in IPL, was dismissed by Nehra for 2 reducing KKR to 23/4 in 5 overs. SA Yadav joined RN ten Doeschate and added 28 runs before Jadeja had him caught by Ashwin at short third man.
KKR looked out and dusted at 51/5 in 9 overs and still 107 required in 11 overs as Andre Russell walked in to join Rn ten Doeschate. Russell hammered 16 runs in just 3 deliveries with 2 sixes and a four in the 11th over bowled by Jadeja bringing down the required runs to 81 off 54 deliveries.
With 50 required from 5 overs, Mohit Sharma returning for his 3rd over, was hit for 2 consecutive sixes by Russell following it up with a boundary. The over cost CSK 18 runs and helped bring down the equation to 32 off 24 deliveries.
Nehra, the pick of the CSK bowlers bowled a beautiful Yorker to dismiss Russell for 58 off just 25 deliveries, but bowled a wide the next ball to give away 5 wides. He finished his spell with 4-21, but that did not help CSK as KKR chased down the target in the last ball of the 19th over with 3 wickets in hand.
