Sep 9 ( ) : It will be a different feeling altogether while watching the men’s final as two men who were not talked about as potential finalists till they beat the world no1 and world no 3 in the men’s semi final, fight it out for their first grand slam title.
Whoever wins among the pair of Marin Cilic who defeated Federer in straight sets 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 in the semi finals and Kei Nishikori who denied Novak Djokovic his 5th straight US open final, will be the 4th person to win a grand slam this year in the men’s event.
The big service Cilic will have his hands full as the Japanese pocket dynamo has shown in the last 3 games that he is here to stay and is not awed by the presence of the top guns that he has been defeating.
Cilic, coached by Goran Ivanisevic, played a blinder of a game to defeat 32 year old Federer who was looking good till then to win his 18th grand slam. This will be his first grand slam final and so will it be for Kei Nishikori.
It should be a mouth-watering contest as Cilic would be sending his booming serves which Kei Nishikori will be looking to dispatch back with more power and vigour.
In the men’s doubles event, world No 1 duo, American twins Bob and Mike Bryan won their 100th doubles title, becoming the first pair in the history of doubles to do so. They beat Marcel Granollers and Marc Lopez of Spain 6-3, 6-4 to win their fifth US open title and their 16th grand slam overall.
This was their first grand slam victory of the year which makes it a grand slam title every year for the pair in the last 10 years.
