Mumbai, Aug 28 (): Impressed by the subject of the film and performance of Rani Mukerji in Mardaani, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister, Shivraj Singh Chouhan has announced to give tax-free status to the film. Furthermore, the Rani Mukerji-starrer has also been freed from entertainment tax in Uttar Pradesh, an official said on Tuesday.
Chief Minister Chouhan watched the film in a multiplex with his wife Sadhna; he later tweeted that he would give “tax free” status to ‘Mardaani’ in Madhya Pradesh. The decision to exempt the film from tax was taken by the CM due to the “bold social message” of the film.
He said woman trafficking is one of the worst social evils and this social evil has to be eliminated and admirably ‘Mardaani’ has brought this important subject on focus.
Rani Mukerji thanked Chouhan for the gesture through a statement issued through the Facebook and Twitter handle of Yash Raj Films.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav also said the same. A state government spokesman said owing to the theme of the film which depicts the battle of a woman against crimes against women and sexual offenders, the Uttar Pradesh CM had taken the decision of exempting the film from taxes.
The spokesman said the movie had portrayed serious social problems like sexual offences and crimes against women and had given a positive message to society. He added the film shows the fight of a woman against such evils and it was therefore decided by the government to make it tax-free.
Mardaani is doing well at the box office, earning 16.89 crores up till Monday. The mark the success of the film, the makers of the film organized a success meet in Mumbai, on Tuesday, August 26. Actress Rani Mukerji attended the success meet.
The other members of Mardaani team – Pradeep Sarkar, Tahir Bhasin and Gopi – were also present for the meet and all were in a delighted mood. The team also celebrated the film going tax-free in MP and UP.
