Aug 18 () : India brought on to themselves their third heaviest innings defeat by going down to England by an innings and 244 runs in the fifth and final test at The Oval on Sunday.
The day started in the worst way possible as Root sent the Indian bowlers all over the park helping England score 101 runs in just 10.3 overs. He scored his 5th century, second of the series, ending on 149 n.o. Broad helped himself to 37 runs, thanks to the uninspiring bowling attack.
With India requiring to score 338 runs to make England bat again, the openers yet again failed to give a decent start. For a change, Vijay started the parade as he was dismissed leg before to Anderson for 2 with the team score on 6. Gambhir , who has had a nightmare of a comeback, was run out for 3 when Pujara sent him back on a single.
After the fall of Gambhir’s wicket, rain intervened, but it was not enough to save India the blushes. Pujara was caught behind off Anderson while Rahane was splendidly held at slips by Ballance making it 45 for 4. Dhoni, who helped India avoid a sub 100 score in the first innings, went for a duck this time making it 5 down for 46.
Kohli who has not scored more than 39 this series, was out to Jordan for 20 and the rest of the batsmen soon followed. Jordan helped himself to 4 wickets in just 19 deliveries to blow the death knell as India were bowled out for 94 with Binny remaining not out on 25.
Anderson who has been fired up since the defeat at Lord’s ended up with 2 wickets while Broad and Woakes took one each. The pick of the bowlers as mentioned was Jordan as he ended up with 7 wickets for the match.
– India suffer their third worst innings defeat in their test history.
– The 94 runs they scored was their 6th lowest ever score in England.
– Cook’s team was the second team ever, after Don Bradman’s invincibles to come back after being down 1-0 after 2 tests.
– The 242 runs India scored in the match was their lowest in a test in England in 64 years.
– Kohli was outscored by the team extras – 134 runs in the series in 10 innings to 177.
– Pujara’s average of 22.2 in the series was the lowest ever for an Indian no.3 in England.
– India has now lost 13 of their last 17 tests they have played abroad in the last 3 years.
