Chennai,Aug 18 () : Chennai, celebrating its 375th anniversary is preparing with all zest and gusto to ring in its birthday celebrations on August 22,The Madras Day.
The week-long celebrations planned from August 17-24 will comprise a host of cool and educational activities right from photo exhibitions, competitions, walking tours, heritage walks and cycle rides, to name a few. There are also some fun events and activities specially designed for children.
Madras Day commemorates the day the British East India Company acquired a small patch of land from a Vijayanagara king in 1639 to build Fort St George around which the city of Madras grew over the years.
Home to 4.344 million people of diverse communities and spread over 426 sq.km, Madras has evolved into ‘Namma Chennai’ over the years encompassing vast changes in all spheres of growth.
Life in Chennai is a heady and healthy mix of old and new – one may make it a bucket list of sorts to sample and experience every bit of Chennai – be it century-old temples, churches, the wooded and amazingly silent Theosopohical Society, fancy malls, high-end multiplexes, an endless range of cuisines on offer from pavement vendors to star hotels merrily juxtaposed with Pizza Corner,Mc Donalds etc. (Oru Soru, Zha Café, Zameendar, Malli Chilli,Junior Kuppanna, Simran’s Appa Kadai,That Madras Place are some of the eateries with quirky names), acclaimed educational institutions, hospitals of repute and international standards, classy textile houses to boutiques, old and new jewellers, a maze of mega textile showrooms and pavement vendors in the one and only happening T-Nagar, the beehive of trading activities – Parrys Corner and the most one can be proud of – the beautifully long Marina Beach with a 37-year old and 58-metre high Light House …and much more in the hidden pages of history and ever-unfolding chapters of Chennai!
Not to forget Kollywood that would leave you star-struck all through the year and the December music season that would be a turn-on for those musically inclined!
Happy birthday,Chennai and Vanakkam!
