Aug 14 (): The traditional game of Kabaddi, which is also the national game of Bangladesh, has taken a professional avatar as Pro Kabaddi, thanks to Mashal Sports who have organised the event and is taken to the public through Star Sports.
Pro Kabaddi has commenced for the first year as an eight-city league tournament, played in July and August ’14 on a caravan format – each team playing each other twice.
The tournament has been given a fillip with the International Kabaddi Federation (IKF) backing it along with Asian Kabaddi Federation(AKF) and the Amateur Kabaddi Federation of India (AKFI). All three are closely associated with the tournament which has helped get the required attention from all quarters.
The game which is played with seven players a side has eight teams in similar lines to the IPL teams which are playing in this tournament. They are U Mumba, Bengaluru Bulls, Jaipur Pink Panthers, Patna Pirates, Dabang Delhi, Telugu Titans, Bengal Warriors and Puneri Paltan representing all the major cities.
With only three weeks left for the tournament, all teams, except for Jaipur, have played either 7 or more games already, meaning each and every game going forward is crucial as the teams do not have the cushion to bounce back, in case of a loss.
U Mumba leads the table comfortably with 37 points from its 9 games with 6 wins and 2 draws while Bengaluru Bulls are second on 26 points closely followed by Jaipur Pink Panters on 25 points.
In yesterday’s match, Bengaluru Bulls lock their horns with Dabang Delhi while in the other match, Puneri Paltan meet Jaipur Pink Panthers at the Sri Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex, Pune. The first match starts at IST 8.00 pm while the second is scheduled for a 9.10 pm start.
