May 29 () : Kolkata Knight Riders(KKR) sealed their spot in the finals for the 2nd time in IPL by beating Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) comprehensively at Kolkata.
Kings XI Punjab won the toss and with rain in the air, decided to bowl first. While Gambhir failed, Uthappa, having got the news that he was part of the squad to Bangladesh , got to his 9th consecutive score of 40+ ( 42 off 32 ) with the help of 2 sixes and 4 hits to the boundary.
None of the other KKR batsmen went on to score big with the next highest scorer being Pandey with 21. Some late order cameos from RN ten Doeschate with 17 off 10 and Yadav’s 20 off 14 helped KKR put up a competitive score of 163. With rain intervening during the innings, the score was supposed to be a challenge to chase.
A R Patel was the pick of the bowlers as he gave away only 11 runs in his 4 overs with a mind boggling economy rate of 2.75 picking up 2 important wickets of Uthappa and Pandey in the process, which even Sunil Narine would have found difficult to emulate.
With a possibility of the Duckworth Lewis equation coming into picture due to rain, KXIP started the chase on a wrong foot losing Sehwag in the 2nd over to Umesh Yadav. He was the pick of the bowlers in KKR ending up with 3 wickets at an economy rate of 3.25 giving away 13 runs. His performance was one better than Patel as he ended up with the wickets of Maxwell and Bailey too.
Vohra (26 off 19) and Saha (35 off 31) tried to bring some stability to the chase but were not able to stick around for a long innings. Maxwell and Miller failed to make an impact as they were dismissed for 6 and 8 respectively. Bailey tried to get the scoring up but was left with no support on the other end and holed out in the 20th over trying to score 30 off 6 balls.
KKR beat KXIP by 28 runs and have qualified for the finals for the 2nd time . They will meet the winners of the match between Chennai Super Kings and KXIP for the IPL 7 championship match.
