May 21 (): Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) handed over Chennai Super Kings (CSK) their second consecutive loss to move closer to the play offs of IPL 7.
Put into bat, Chennai Super Kings lost their first wicket in the 2nd over in the form of Smith for 5. The losses in the last couple of games can also be attributed to the lack of runs from the opening pair who was going strong in the first 8 matches of the season.
McCullum (28 off 24) and Raina ( 65 off 42 – 3 Fours, 5 Sixes) added 55 runs for the second wicket . The 4th over of the innings bowled by Cummins yielded 16 runs as McCullum hit him for 2 sixes over third man and cover.
Narine, who started his spell by being hit for a six off the very first ball, brought things under control quickly. Shakib and Umesh Yadav brought back the run rate under control and by the end of the 10th, CSK were only at 59/1.
Raina who was on 26 off 33 deliveries when McCullum was dismissed, then opened up. In the company of F du Plessis he went about increasing the scoring rate. The bowler to suffer most was Chawla who was hit for 2 sixes and a boundary in 3 consecutive deliveries of the 14th over yielding 19 runs. Dhoni’s late innings contribution of 21 off 15 helped CSK set a target of 155 for KKR. The pick of the bowlers without any doubt was Narine giving away only 24 off his 4 overs.
Gambhir and Uthappa gave KKR another astounding start adding 62 runs for the opening wicket in 6.2 overs, thanks to the below par fielding standards of CSK. Man of the match Uthappa was dropped by Ashwin in the slip cordon on 6 in the very first over before Raina dropped him again in the 3rd over. Uthappa rubbed salt in the wound by scoring 3 boundaries in the next 4 deliveries he faced after his first life.
To drop a man twice who has the lowest score of 40 in his last 6 innings was nothing but trouble and Uthappa made CSK pay for those two lapses. He clobbered 67 runs off just 39 balls with the help of 10 boundaries and a six. Shakib , as per his standards, has not contributed much with the bat this season and he made amends for that by playing positively. He scored 17 off a Hilfenhaus over to bring down the required rate and took KKR over the line in just 18 overs, scoring 46 off just 21 deliveries.
With the win, KKR are on level with Rajasthan Royals on 14 points but trailing them due to the net run rate. This also means Chennai Super Kings are through to the play offs irrespective of the results of the other matches.
