IPL 7 (May 18 Result) KKR inches closer to qualifying (Points Table)

May 19 ():  Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) took a step closer to qualifying for the play-offs with a victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH).

Choosing to bat first, Sunrisers Hyderabad lost Finch early, yet again. Dhawan played a couple of pleasing shots and scored 4 boundaries before Narine got his man for 19 off 14 balls. N Ojha(22 off 24) played some aggressive strokes hitting 2 sixes but was caught at backward point trying to hit Shakib for another six.

The issue with the SRH innings was that none of the batsmen went on to a big score and no substantial partnerships were built.  Warner was playing at his aggressive best but Rahul, accompanying him, was dismissed for 14 off 15 failing to read a googly off Chawla. With 100 on the board in 13 overs, the team looked on track to get close to 180 but the dismissal of Warner ( 34 off 18 – 3 Fours, 2 Sixes) changed things.

Sammy and Pathan came together at the fall of Warner’s wicket but were not able to force the run rate.  Of the two, Sammy struggled to even rotate the strike and was finally dismissed for 7 off 16 balls. Pathan remained not out with 23 off 19 but SRH from a position to score 180 ended on 142 with only 42 runs coming in the last 7 overs.

Narine was as usual very economical, giving away only 21 runs and Chawla assisted him with 24 off 4 overs.

The streak of 50+ partnerships between Uthappa and Gambhir was broken as Steyn gave the break- through in the 2nd over dismissing Gambhir. Pandey ( 35 off 32) in the company of Uthappa (40 off 33) rebuilt the innings with a 51 run partnership before Uthappa was run out.

Pandey’s dismissal in the 16th over left KKR to get 39 runs off 28 deliveries. Yusuf Pathan who has been showing glimses of form in the last 2 games played well to score 39 off 28 deliveries with 2 boundaries and 2 sixes in the company of RN ten Doeschate, who clobbered 25 off just 15 deliveries bringing victory to KKR with 2 balls to spare.

KKR is in 4th place with 12 points leading RCB by 2 and SRH by 4 points. In the battle for the playoffs, at the current stage, KKR seems to have their nose ahead, but cricket being a funny game, you never know.
