New Delhi, Mar 9 () : BJP is finding it difficult to zero in on a constituency in UP for Modi. This was the reason for the first list not containing Modi.
Kanpur ,Lucknow and Varanasi have been chosen by BJP campaign in-charge Amit Shah. All the three are having problems. According to an internal survey conducted by BJP, the party can win 28 seats in the region and influence eight in nearby Bihar, if Modi is fielded from there. RSS wants Modi to contest from Varanasi signaling that it is time up for sitting MP and veteran Murli Manohar Joshi. Joshi has opposed the idea.
BJP wanted to field Modi from Lucknow, because it was represented five times by former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Symbolically, BJP wants to show that Modi is as good as Vajpayee. But party president Rajnath Singh has started campaigning for himself from Lucknow.
Kanpur for Modi, was suggested since Kanpur is the only industrial hub of UP. Using Gujarat model, it can woo Kanpur voters but three-time MP Sriprakash Jaiswal and Coal minister is a strong opponent.
Lack of consensus on Modi’s candidature from UP could affect the prospects of the party. BJP has now decided to deploy 400 raths instead of 55 which would roll out across UP playing Modi’s speeches, and documentaries on his life and achievement. This rath has LCD screens fanning to rural areas as many have not attended Modi’s rallies. It has been waiting for EC nod.
Joshi has strongly objected to giving up Varanasi and his men have started a campaign. Overruling Joshi could create problems and Rajnath as BJP president cannot back out from Lucknow after starting a campaign. It leaves only Kanpur. In all likelihood, Modi will opt for Kanpur and it has to be seen if Jaiswal will oppose Modi.
