New Delhi, Mar 1 (): Sahara Subrata Roy has BJP, SP and a host of political party leaders except Sonia and P Chidambaram in his fan club. It is no wonder that a Mulayam Singh controlled police lodged Roy in a guest house after executing an arrest warrant given by Supreme Court. Many say that it is a great concession considering that he was not kept in his Sahara town located in Lucknow.
Many remember the Sahara bash in a hotel in Delhi with Lok Sabha Opposition leaders Sushma Swaraj and RS opposition leader Arun Jaitley, to then Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit, ex-President Pratibha Patil, Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar to Congress spokesperson Digvijaya Singh and NC ‘s Union minister Farooq Abdullah.
Mulayam Singh Yadav was the master of ceremonies along with Amitabh Bachchan’s family. Ex-Supreme Court Judge Markandey Katju and Press Council Chairman were present. Notable absentees were Sonia Gandhi and Uttar Pradesh CM Akhilesh Yadav. Sonia was wooed with offers to use Sahara chopper and a request to meeting was spurned.
Roy had said Sahara troubles with the Reserve Bank and Sebi started after he had told that an Indian citizen should become a PM. Even though Mulayam stands by Roy, his son UP CM Akhilesh does not like him. Roy’s investment business grew with support of UP Congress CM in the 80’s.
In 1993, when those who took to streets for non-payment of money by Sahara, they were lathi-charged and muzzled by then CM Mulayam. His love for BJP too continues and when the saffron party came to power with Kalyan Singh as CM, his township was partly demolished. He got a reprieve after a BJP minister close to Sahara bailed him out. Roy then realized that it is better to invest outside UP.
BJP president Rajnath Singh then as UP CM used Sahara copters to transport MLAs to show it has the numbers before Rashtrapati Bhavan in 1998. Roy was seen at Modi’s swearing-in ceremony in 2012. When BJP lost in UP and Mulayam came to power, Roy was seen with Big B’s family.
BSP’s Mayawati coming to power saw Sahara at the receiving end. His TV channels started praising Maya. This time however only SP has supported him and BJP says law will take the course as it is a SC ordered arrest.
