Alagiri suspended to pacify DMDK

Chennai, Jan 24 (): Alagiri, son of Karunanidhi and the south zone organizing secretary has been suspended from DMK to facilitate the alliance with Vijaykant-led DMDK.

Alagiri and his supporters, mainly in Madurai and southern districts of the State had been in grouped wars. He, in an interview had told a TV channel that Vijaykant did not have the maturity to run a political party. This came at a time when DMK was spreading the red carpet for DMDK to come in for an alliance in coming LS polls and support its RS candidate Siva.

Five close aides, including former Deputy Mayor of Madurai were suspended for indulging in poster war against the Stalin faction. The suspension led to Alagiri coming to Chennai to meet his mother, but going back without seeing his father who stays in the same house.

Later, a compromise seemed to have been made since he had a meeting with his father. On reaching Madurai, he started organizing meetings of his supporters. He started galvanizing his supporters across the Southern districts.

Yesterday, DMK faction fight came out in the open. Alagiri toured his LS constituency and told party workers to report to him. Madurai district secretary appointed by Stalin was booked under SC&ST Act on a complaint by Alagiri supporter. Similarly, ex-adurai Mayor too faced a complaint under the same act on a complaint filed by Alagiri’s supporter. Stalin supporters sent faxes to the party president Karunanidhi.

On the sidelines, DMDK decided to invite applications for LS polls . DMDK wanted Alagiri to be kept away from the polls and that Madurai and southern districts be given to them to field their candidates.

Karunanidhi had said that decision on forming an alliance was taken by the general council after the comment by Alagiri that he did not think Vijaykant is a politician worth giving focus and that DMK can do good without DMDK support. He said that the DMK decision to snap ties with Congress was not conveyed to him.

For the RS poll, DMK said it would not go to Congress for support. Stalin’s camp says that with Alagiri out of the way, DMK will only benefit and would have little impact on the party cadres. Alagiri is away on a foreign tour and his birthday falls on January 30. He was once suspended from the party when he said he was not a DMK member at all.
